Art Day
I really wanted to make use of my scanner, access to free color copies and library card to decorate before the holiday rush so today was like my own Art Day. I went to the Queens Library and took out two books with awesome print potential and that were light to carry. I ended up picking up a color picture book on the drawings of Manolo Blahnik ; Andy Worhols book on flowers and Frida Kahlos masterpieces. The first two I picked because they had really nice commercially pleasing prints, great for making cards and prints to hang. I got some great scans that I will be printing while I still have access to print for free.
The last allowed me rediscovered my love for Frida Kahlo's work. I used to really be into art but as life got busy, I really never got to return to my appreciation of art. Sometimes, I think what they say about art is true, its really for the filthy rich or artists themselves. To have the time and peace of mind to just look is a luxury. So hence why categorized this post under entertainment, it was really a great way to pass time and senses.
DIY GIFT and Decorating idea
Print and frame these yourselves. You can make it an expensive looking gift by blowing up like poster and framing as huge centerpiece. Or you can go smaller and put in small modern frames or even in unique shapes. The advantage of getting copy from book is you can preserve the texture of the work making it look less like a simple zerox.
You can find cheap frames typically at goodwill or dollar store or NYC side walks. To modernize them, you can spray paint them a nice color depending on what decor your trying to match like white or black.
Or on a smaller scale, you can print on card stock to make unique ThankYou cards or gift tags to brighten up a home made gift.

Two Broke Girls
I don't know if its the recession or just being a New Yorker but this show is hysterical. I accidently caught it after watching HIMYM and I stayed up all night catching the first 3 episodes I missed. It's just hysterical. It's alil raunchy humour but its really smart. I'd totally catch the first 3 episodes for free on HULU and start watching it. It's on at 8:30 EST on Mondays.

Limitless with Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper
LIMITLESS is what Wall Street 2 should have been... I loved this movie and totally have to thank Blockbuster Express for the opportunity to watch this movie for free!
I felt like this movie was just tailor made for me lol. For those of you who know me, I was on the Provigil news bandwagon since it first came out. It's the closest thing we have to a Designer Brain Steroid and I always said Wall Street and Corporate America would be the group to abuse it. This movie really entertains what really could happen in our world ( if its not happening already) if we had an even more advanced version of Provigil. And what I especially love is that you don't have to be Genius to get it , like with Inception. It has 3 of my favorite actors De Niro, Bradley Cooper and the long lost Johnny Whitemore!

Update : Life without TimeWarner
I wanted to give you all an update on my life without BASIC cable from TimeWarner and my HD Antenna. I do love my TV shows and I am really surprised at how much BETTER, my TV watching experience has been. Not only does my Antenna give me clearer reception but my reception even went undisturbed during Hurricane Irene. Back when I paid for Time Warner cable practically every time it rained my service went down. So not only have I permanently cut $30 from my monthly bills but the icing on the cake, is my search for Frugal Entertainment has allowed me to watch even more shows and movies for free!
Heres How:
-Blockbuster Express Kiosks : I watch a ton of newly released rentals for free via their promo codes which post regularly on this site.
-NY Public Library: I borrow DVDs of movies and TV series box sets, and keep them for over a week all for free.
-Hulu: Most of my favorite TV shows like are for free on HULU. If you need to watch older back episodes, you may need to get Premium. Mostly I watch non basic cable channel shows on HULU like HDTV and USA network shows. And you don’t need TIVO because if you’re a week or two behind, you can catch all back episodes of a lot of your favorite shows.
-Sidereel.com: Warning you definitely need a anti-virus program to watch shows on this website . The Pro is it has all the popular Cable TV shows.
**A lot people talk about NETFLIX as an alternative but if you live in NYC and have a free Public Library Card there really is no reason to pay $7.99 for what you can watch for free. Most shows on CBS, FOX, The CW, ABC stream for free a day or two after airing. And as NYC residents, we all have a zillion Duane Reades in our neighborhoods or work neighborhoods to watch DVDs for a dollar or free with the many Blockbuster express codes out there. Not to mention Public Libraries.
Tip: But if you really want to try it.. they always have a first time customer free trial. If you’ve never ever done it before, then here’s an excellent deal scenario. If you have a Swagbucks account, sign up through them and you’ll get 1000 Swagbucks for trying the 1 month free trial. Which is super because on top of your month free trial you’ll get enough points to redeem for $10 worth of Amazon, E-certificate codes.
If you don't have Swagbucks account, get one ASAP its awesome!

Okay, I just saw "Just Go With It" and it's so against my shrewist nature to say this but DANG... from the movie I can actually now understand how models can earns Millions. I mean this scene literally, I can't imagine how it went in the theater but I'm a girl and my jaw dropped when I saw those boobs. Like OMG is it possible to have boobs like that? Beside Brooklyn Deckers boobs, the movie with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston (love her ) is an awesome chic flick. Didn't make me die laughing like his other movies but I like how they both make movies for their aging audiences. And you'll be surprised to see some familiar faces being hysterical.

Not all Living Social and Groupon Deals are great deals
At first glance this may look like a great deal, especially if your a shopacholic and your bored at work. You get 2 movie tickets to a brand new movie and $30 to spend at a East Village restaurant. In Manhattan theater tickets will be on average $15 a pop. So most people will think hey free dinner. But if your an avid deal scourer; on average you can find two movie tickets for $10 even for new movies. Like a month ago there was a Fadango deal where you get two movie tickets for $9; no date restrictions.
In terms of resturant, this is in the middle of no where East Village. So you and companion will be doing a good amount of walking if you don't live by obscure subway line or taking a cab. The deal is for dinner and if you look at Menu this place has average entree price of $20. Even if you get something on the lesser Tapas Bar Menu, if you spend a minimum of $30 your tip will be $6. So total minimum spent will be $36. And considering that you can probably get 2 movie tickets for $10 if your savvy; your spending additional $26 to get a $30 meal where your committed to a restuarant you've never tried. On top of the fact it says in the fine print you have to call and make reservations.
So not a great deal for savvy deal hunters. But if you're not a deal hunter and your gonna blow money on a new movie and dinner anyways you will save.
Hope this post reminds you that not all Living Social and Groupons are worth it and to always read the fine print.

Free NYC Brooklyn Bridge Trip
I can't believe as a New Yorker, I've never walked the Brooklyn Bridge. Its amazing, relaxing and free!
Where we started: Cobble Hill Brooklyn ( 2nd favorite BK neighborhood). Its filled with beautiful Brownstones, Cafes and Shops. They have one Indy Movie theater and another regular AMC theater. If you don't want to spend money on food; you can just bring a picnic lunch and eat at a local park with other picnic'in locals. Definately, bring a bottle of frozen ice water for your bridge walk later.
For us, we watched movie (thank you Groupon); ate leisurely and then went on our after food coma walk to the Bridge. Thanks to my shutterbug friend for photos.
It's ironic considering this if a functioning bridge with cars, but you really do feel the sea air doing this walk. Its almost a surreal feeling because you walking on this huge NYC bridge suspended over water.
And check out the view, gosh I wished I could afford to live here. Maybe when Michelle Williams and Kerri Russell move; the neighborhood will become affordable again. For now, a walk or even biking trip to Brooklyn Bridge is steller Frugal Girl way to spend a lazy weekend afternoon.

On a friends recommendation (who btw is now hooked on these free Blockbuster codes )
The Adjustment Bureau is actually a good movie. I was really surprised, it tries to sort be a light version of Inception but really turns out to be a kind of an idealistic love story.
And for the inner Calli girl in me, I loved Blue Crush 2. Yes, its corny. Yes, the acting is mostly lame. But its a great surf movie, amazing shots and I love the feminism and nice pro-minority spin in the movie. Its the first time, I've ever seen an African American surfer ever. Gosh it reminded me of my own youthful summers surfing and just being a free spirit. It also reminded me of an On The Road movie adaptation taking place in Africa.

Free Blockbuster Express Codes
For those nights when you just want to stay in and rent a movie. NYC libraries are the best, there so many DVDs and CD's you can borrow for FREE (typically for 3 days).
However, for newer releases I love Blockbuster Express. Especially with their codes that make most rentals free. And its so convenient because you can borrow from any Duane Reade with a Kiosk and return the DVD to any other store with a Kiosk.
